Olympic Park site

The infrastructure and enabling works for the Olympic Park site in East London have been assessed under CEEQUAL

Dear CEEQUAL Community

Welcome to the latest CEEQUAL e-news, at a time when CEEQUAL is at a very exciting stage in its development. As you will see from this issue’s articles, we are, for the first time, taking our Annual CEEQUAL Seminar to Glasgow, the online assessment tool is about to be released, the development of the Term Contracts version of CEEQUAL continues apace, and CEEQUAL Assessors will soon be able to use the CEEQUAL process on their international projects.

Uptake of the Scheme continues to grow steadily, with 263 applications overall, 61 completed Awards, plus 22 Interim Awards, and 180 assessments currently in progress. The total value of projects that have been or are being assessed is now nearing the £15 billion mark.

Here are the headlines at a glance:

CEEQUAL latest

Book now for the CEEQUAL Annual Seminar in Glasgow
Places are booking up fast for this year’s free Annual CEEQUAL Seminar at the ICE Scotland in Glasgow, which takes place on Monday 19 July, from 4.00pm to 7.00pm.

Speakers include Roger Venables, CEEQUAL Chief Executive, and Emma Clark, Senior Environmental and Sustainable Design Consultant at AECOM. They will explain the benefits of using the CEEQUAL methodology on all types of civil engineering and public realm projects, illustrated by examples of projects that have recently received a CEEQUAL Award.

The seminar is free to attend, but places are limited and advance booking is essential. Please book now to avoid disappointment!

To register, please download a booking form, or email Charles Perkin.

CEEQUAL Assessments soon to be done online
The new online assessment tool, announced in the last e-newsletter, will be rolled out over the course of July.

From August onwards, all new assessments will be done using the CEEQUAL online assessment tool. The Assessor and Verifier for each project will receive a unique username and password to access their project-specific area.

Scoping-out information, scores and evidence will be entered and logged in exactly the same way as was the case with the Excel spreadsheets.

In addition to this, Assessors will be able to upload document evidence, and a progress bar will indicate to all users how a project is progressing.

A guide on how to use the online assessment tool, for both Assessors and Verifiers, will be made available on the CEEQUAL Assessor & Verifier portal.

If you have any questions about the new online tool please contact Phil Edwards.

Progress on CEEQUAL Term Contracts version
The Term Contracts version of CEEQUAL has now been piloted on seven contracts, spanning a range of different types of civil engineering works, including highways and utilities maintenance.

The results and feedback from Assessors and Verifiers piloting the Term Contracts scheme were discussed by the Project Steering Group on 5 July.

In response to that feedback, a further draft of the Term Contracts Scheme Manual will be developed over the summer, and reviewed by the Project Steering Group in September. Assuming a positive outcome to that meeting, we anticipate being able to launch the fully-fledged CEEQUAL Term Contracts Version in late 2010.

To find out more, please contact Ian Nicholson.

Using CEEQUAL on large-scale projects
The ODA has been using CEEQUAL to assess the infrastructure and enabling works for the 2012 Olympic Park project. Applying CEEQUAL to such a large-scale project poses its own challenges and required a unique approach to managing the assessments across a team of 22 Assessors.

Samantha Connolly, Environmental Impacts Manager for the Olympic Delivery Partner, describes the process.

International version of CEEQUAL to be developed
At its meeting on 21 June, the CEEQUAL Board approved the development of an international version of CEEQUAL. This decision was taken in response to a request from CEEQUAL users with international interests. The international version will be available to experienced Assessors and will be developed alongside CEEQUAL’s involvement in Australia and the USA in developing sustainability rating systems for civil engineering works.

If you are interested in participating in this development, please contact Roger Venables.
