Gas pipeline project receives CEEQUAL 'Excellent' Award
The project team for the Harefield to Southall gas pipeline project was presented with a CEEQUAL Excellent
Award at National Grid’s Gas Transmission Main Works Contractors SHE Forum in Ambergate on 1 June 2010.
The underground, high-pressure, steel pipeline between Harefield and Southall in Middlesex is a National Grid project, designed and constructed by Murphy Pipelines in order to meet energy demand in West London.
Paul de Jong, National Grid Manager for sustainable construction said: “We were keen to benchmark our sustainability performance for the first time on a major construction project and are delighted with our CEEQUAL Whole Project Award. We scored especially high on waste management, which reflects the project team’s efforts to minimise material taken to landfill and maximise the use of recycled resources”.
The consideration of different materials, construction methods and approaches scored highly in the assessment process as well as leading to overall cost savings, reduction in carbon emissions and waste minimisation. For example:
- By using the excavated clay from 2.5km of underground tunnels to cap a nearby pitch at Hayes Gate
Football Club, the project saved an estimated 1,500 lorry movements, and the associated carbon
emissions, as well as landfill disposal costs
- Using a specially developed carbon calculator tool to assess different design options, the team built elliptical shafts instead of more traditional rectangular piled shafts or concrete segmental ring shafts, resulting in an estimated carbon saving of around 3,500 tonnes.
- Instead of cement grouting, the team used sand to fill the large-diameter tunnels on the pipeline route. A recycled product made from waste glass was used as an alternative to sand to fill the annulus of the pipejacks. This innovation saved around 5,000 tonnes of embedded carbon. John Trounson, National Grid senior project manager added: “We are really pleased to receive an excellent award for sustainability considering the many engineering and environmental challenges involved with this project. Finding innovative solutions to these challenges have provided huge environmental benefits as well as proving to be cost effective.”
